Premises

To all Patients of Dr Hudson and Partners                                                                                      24th November 2007

Your GP Practice has plans to move from its current premises in South Ham and Hatch Warren to a new single site in South Ham. It is very early days at the moment but we wanted to make sure you were kept informed right the way through this potential process of change. We apologise for the length of this letter but thought you would rather have all the information than a shortened version.

Background
Dr Hudson and Partners is a partnership of 6 doctors who work out of two surgeries in Basingstoke. The main surgery at South Ham, in Paddock Road and a branch surgery in Moorhams Avenue, Hatch Warren. The Practice has been operating since the 1960’s when Dr Hilditch formed the GP team providing healthcare at the newly built Health Centre in Paddock Road, South Ham.

Over the last 40 years healthcare has changed, almost beyond recognition, and the building at South Ham is now old, dilapidated and not fit for the purpose of a modern health care centre. At the same time the way that general practice operates has also changed significantly and, as patients, we know you want a variety of services from your GP.

Our Plans for the Future
Dr Hudson and Partners, rising to the challenge of providing quality healthcare in the Basingstoke area, has submitted a plan to the Hampshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) to change its premises and move to a new purpose built Health Centre in the South Ham area. In particular the doctors want to be able to provide:

  • an appointment for you to see the correct healthcare professional for your needs when you need that appointment.
  • premises that are pleasant, modern and flexible enough to provide the correct accommodation for current and future NHS requirements.
  • a range of clinics provided for all patients with chronic long term conditions.
  • a treatment room where minor operations can be performed, meaning that patients do not have to travel to their local hospital for those procedures.

The New Health Centre
The new Health Centre will be rented from Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council who are, at the moment, looking at potential sites in South Ham. A site has not been decided upon yet but when it has the full planning process will take place and patients and local residents will be able to comment on any planning application in the usual way.

One of the main advantages of the Practice working from one site instead of two is that patients are more likely to be able to see their own doctor. In the most recent Government patient survey this Practice did not achieve very good ratings on patients being able to book an appointment with a specific GP. This is because our doctors work on two sites. With them all working from one site the situation will be greatly improved. You will definitely get a better service.

Choices for patients
When the new Health Centre is complete and ready for occupation both South Ham and Hatch Warren surgeries will be closed and all patients given the option of seeing their doctor at the new Health Centre. However if, for whatever reason, you do not want to go to the new Health Centre the PCT has made sure that there is room for you to re-register at the Beggarwood surgery.

As your GPs, of course, we hope you will continue to be registered with us.

More Information
The new Health Centre will not be ready until, at the earliest, April 2009. Until then both South Ham and Hatch Warren surgeries will continue to function as they do at the moment.
As the project moves forward the Practice will have leaflets available in the surgeries and information will be posted on the website
www.hwsurgery.f9.co.uk. Importantly, the Patient Group will continue to help inform the decision making process as it progresses. The Practice will also be running its annual patient surveys in December 07 and December 08 and there will be a section for patient comments on these forms. They will be available in both surgeries.

We value the input of our patients, if you have questions, comments or concerns about the new Health Centre project you can write to the Practice Manager, Mrs Anne Phillips at the South Ham address above or you can email south.ham@nhs.net.

This is an exciting time for the Practice and you - our patients, and we look forward to sharing our plans with you as they are formulated.

Yours faithfully

Drs Stephen Hudson, Colin Meeking, Swati Patel, Richard Parker, Nicholas Western and Catherine Craig-Wood.
